Stamford women’s rugby team returned to action on Friday night for their first ever match under floodlights against a formidable Deeping Devils ladies’ team.

Whilst the 29-15 scoreline favoured Stamford, the game was a very evenly match up of two very competitive and talented teams which showcased the best of women’s rugby in South Lincolnshire.

Stamford got the evening off to a flying start when after five minutes of constant pressure in the Deeping half Hannah Dennis was passed the ball from a ruck and stormed over and scored their first try of the night.

This was quickly followed by a second home try when a penalty for an offside offence by Deeping resulted in the ball being passed down the backs line until it was in the hands of Jess Breacher who went over to make the score 10-0 to Stamford.

This second try rallied Deeping into producing a more resilient display which was rewarded with two tries before the whistle ended the first half.

A rejuvenated home team came out for the second half chomping at the bit to put more points on the scoreboard.

Special mention should go to the powerful forwards and in particular Sammy Pocock for her strong running forward with the ball and to Jill Boyd putting on an intense performance on her club debut.

Constant pressure on the visitors' defensive line finally provided dividends when a Deeping kick away from their try line went straight in to the hands of Daisy Attley who quickly placed the ball over the visitors try line and then went on to convert her try for the additional points.

A further try from Amber Pearce stretched the home side's lead further before Deeping pulled one back with a well-taken breakaway try.

As the final whistle was on the horizon, there was still time for another Stamford try.

Deeping conceded a penalty on their 22-yard line which was passed directly to Wati Turaga who used all of her strength and guile to power towards and over the visitors try line. The try was converted by Attley.
