Derby match under threat

Have your say

The season-openers between Oakham Cricket Club and Oakham School are in doubt after recent wintry weather.

Ground preparations have been waylaid because of snow. The 2nd XIs are due to meet at the Lime Kilns on April 13, and the 1st XI is due to meet at the school on the same day.

Speaking on Monday, Malcolm Rawlings, groundsman at Oakham’s town club, said: “We have not been able to start. If we can get on this week, we might just get away with it.

“The outfield is not so difficult. It’s the square and getting it compacted that will be difficult.

“The start of the season is not threatened yet but we do need a couple of sunny days with a breeze.”

Oakham’s league fixtures do not start until later in the month and he added: “I have a couple of weeks still to get it ready.”

The two matches between the school and town clubs are planned to be 40 over win or lose games.

Oakham’s first Leicestershire League games are on April 27 with the 1st XI at Cosby and the 2nd XI at home to Ashby Hastings 3rd XI.

Oakham’s Rutland League fixtures begin with a seconds’ clash at home to Newborough on April 28. The Sunday 1sts begin their matches a week later, at home to Newborough.
