It was disappointing day for Deeping Rangers and new manager Michael Goode on Saturday as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at his former club Peterborough Northern Star.

Goode was sacked from Northern Star at the end of last season but made a quick return to football with Deeping who were on a good run going into the match, having won their previous three games.

However he would have been hoping his new side had given a better account of themselves at the weekend.

In a game lacking in quality for large smells Deeping had the first couple of half chances, Jezz Goldson-Williams got behind the defence but mis-controlled the ball and then Dan George saved an effort from Scott Coupland.

Hayden Bream gave Star the lead with a spectacular volley after just 14 minutes and he was on the mark again ten minutes before half time when he levelled from the penalty spot after Rangers’ keeper Danny Bircham brought down Star’s Craig Smith.

At the other end George was called into action to save a header from Jason Kilbride from Tom Smith’s cross just before the break.

In the second half Star put the result beyond doubt with a goal to remember, on a day of beige football Jacob Joyce added some sparkle, taking the ball in his own half he spotted Bircham off his line and launched the a perfectly weighted shot which dipped under the scrambling keeper’s cross bar. David Beckham would have been proud of it.

Deeping had some late chances, Kilbride had an effort deflected for a corner and David Burton-Jones hit a shot through the crowded box but couldn’t find the target.

With six minutes to play substitute Scott Ginty scored a consolation penalty after he was felled in the box by George.

However there was still tome for Joyce to put some gloss on the score with a fourth goal for Peterborough, but the gloss was immediately removed when Jason Dunn was shown a second yellow and dismissed.

It’s a pair of cup matches next for Deeping, who face Sleaford Town at home in the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy tomorrow (Tuesday) night, 7.45pm ko, and then travelling to Leek Town in the FA Cup first qualifying round on Saturday.
