Professional and top amateur golfers from all over the UK and some from as far afield as New Zealand and the USA will be teeing it up at Luffenham Heath Golf Club, Ketton, today (Monday) in the final Regional Qualifier for the British Open.

This is the third year that Luffenham Heath GC has staged Regional Qualifying for the Open, the most prestigious professional golf championship in the world.

The top half dozen or so from Luffenham will join other regional qualifiers from around the country in a final qualification competition for places in the Open itself at St Andrews on July 12.

“It is a great honour for the club to be selected as a regional qualifying venue and reflects great credit on the quality of the golf course and the status of Luffenham Heath,” said Denis Chamberlain, chairman of the club’s finance and business committee.

“It is part of a five-year stint as a qualifying course. In the past two years, the course has provided a stern test for the very best aspiring professionals and we expect the same this year. Our green staff have worked hard over the past few weeks ensuring a tough but fair test of golf for the competitors.

“In addition, competitors this year will be able to enjoy vastly improved changing rooms at Luffenham Heath.

The club has just spent about £400,000 modernising and extending the facilities for golfers.
