A MASSIVE team effort maintained Empingham’s great start to the season with a victory at Bingham on Sunday.
Empingham travelled hoping to banish the memory of being bowled out for just 50 runs there last year; and they didn’t disappoint.
Bingham put Empingham into bat on a tricky wicket, clearly hoping Bingham for another quick win and they took three early wickets to leave Empingham rocking at 26 for 3. But a fine partnership of 65 from Tom Cooper (34) and Matt Denny 23 put Empingham in good shape.
Good knocks from Dave McKevitt 33 and Adam Ireland (17), and some good hitting at the end of the innings by Alex Brown (11) and Rick Cooper (16) got Empingham up to a competitive 185 from their 40 overs.
Bingham’s openers got off to a solid but slow start in reply, putting on 66 by the 20 over mark, with a steadily climbing run rate.
However good bowling from all four Empingham bowlers limited Bingham to 165-9 off 40 overs. McKevitt took one for 21 off 10 overs, Freddy Turner claimed one for 46 off his 10, Dan O’Kane three for 53, and Rick Cooper 3 for 34.
All the side fielded well and one Empingham fan declared: “That was almost a professional performance. It was like watching another team.”
Skipper Tom Cooper added: “That to me sums up not only the weekend but the season so far. Games we have usually been losing, we have found a way to win and confidence is high and promotion is again a real possibility.”
