Oakham United secured their maiden away win of the season as they netted back-to-back victories for the first time this campaign following Saturday's two-goal triumph at Wittering Premiair.

Recent recruit Jacob Joyce scored both of the goals as Seb Hayes' side moved within three points of the fifth-placed Harriers in the Peterborough League Premier Division table.

The two goals came in the final 13 minutes of the contest where Hayes felt his side had produced their best performance of the season in the opening period before Wittering responded strongly after the break until they were rocked by Joyce's late double.

Hayes said: "I thought we played Wittering off the park in the first half. We were the better team by far.

"It was the best we had played all season in the first half. All that was missing was a goal because we did everything but score.

"Credit to Wittering though because they made hard it for us in the second half. They upped their work-rate and caused us problems.

"It was a totally different game in the second half. They came right back into it and neither side was on top.

"They had us worried and it was always going to be about whoever got the first goal going on to win the game.

"We deserved to win the game on our first half performance, but you don't always get what you deserve from matches.

"Wittering never gave up and you could see that, as a group of lads, they were together and they have got some good results this season so for us it's been really good to beat two top five sides in the last couple of weeks."

Oakham had created the better chances in the first period with Harriers goalkeeper Greenhalgh making a fine save from a Michael Nelson header.

Richard Nelson then saw an effort cleared off the line while Joyce went close on several occasions to scoring his first goal for the club.

Harriers were much more in the contest after the break but it was Oakham who hit the front with 13 minutes remaining as Alex McNally cut inside and, as he moved the ball, collided with Wittering goalkeeper Paul Greenhalgh.

The referee waved play on and Joyce took full advantage by pouncing on the loose ball and steering it into the empty net from the edge of the box.

Greenhalgh felt he had been fouled by McNally in the incident and his protests saw him sin-binned for 10 minutes.

And Oakham were able to make the most of having the one-man advantage by doubling their lead.

They worked the ball towards the right wing where Michael Nelson robbed a Wittering defender as he attempted to clear before cutting inside and teeing up Joyce who fired home despite Harriers' last-ditch efforts to keep the shot out of the goal.

The defeat for Wittering was their second successive derby reversal following last weekend's loss to Stamford Lions and boss Sam Cayley feels his side are totally committed to getting their campaign back on track after a solid start to the season.

Cayley said: "After last week's performance against Lions, the boys knew that it was not going to happen again.

"We started slowly and Oakham had the majority of the ball and Paul Greenhalgh made some class saves to keep it goalless.

"We changed things around slightly in the second half and thought we should have scored.

"The last 10 minutes were one to forget though as a mistake led to their opening goal and saw us lose our keeper to a sin-bin for asking about a foul on him leading up to the goal.

"We can't dwell on the result as the performance was much better than the week before and I thought we were good value for a point against a very good Oakham side.

"We're going through a rough patch at the moment but the boys are 100 per-cent committed to turning it around and digging in.

"We haven't worked this hard over the last few years to get ourselves into the Premier Division to not compete.

"We have a cracking bunch of lads who are more than capable of competing in this league."

Both sides are without a game this weekend.
