A NEW era for Uppingham Cricket Club begins on Sunday with the first league game at the club’s new ground, off Leicester Road.

Uppingham’s 2nds, who were promoted to the Rutland League’s third divison last summer, will get their first competitive feel of the wicket when they begin their season at home against Newborough.

Town’s first team are back in Division One of the Rutland League this season but will have to wait two weeks longer to test their new home, when they host Barnack on May 1.

They begin their campaign with the reverse fixture, away at Barnack on Sunday with a new captain, Martyn Bennett, at the helm.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Bennett, predicting Peterborough and Barnack would prove tough opposition this season.

“Our aim is this year is to stay in the division. Mark Cox and Jamie Dumford will have to play well for us but we also have a lot of young lads coming through.”

With top bowler Ben Collins out for the first couple of months due to injury, the bowling attack will be led by left-armer James Molden.

Uppingham will also be making their debut in the Northants Saturday League this season with fixtures beginning in May.

n OAKHAM Cricket Club is hosting a Workforce day at the Lime Kilns tomorrow and on Sunday Junior Cricket resumes at the club.
