Ketton claim first victory of the Peterborough League Premier Division season
Ketton boss Matt Holdup praised the character of his side as they battled back from conceding an early goal to claim their first Peterborough League Premier Division victory of the season on Saturday.
Keith Gray and Connor Breakell bagged the crucial strikes which moved the Rutland side off the foot of the league table after they had found themselves trailing early on in the clash against Holbeach United Reserves.
Holdup said: "The goal we conceded was a little bit sloppy and you felt it was going to be another one of those days.
"But the character of the players was brilliant. The effort was fantastic and it was great to finally get our reward for it."
Ketton came under pressure in the early exchanges and found themselves trailing to Alex Richardson's opener for the Tigers.
Richardson wasn't closed down quickly enough by the Ketton side and fired home a fine finish into the bottom corner of the visitors' net.
Ketton rallied though and got a foothold in the game before their work on setpieces was rewarded with an equaliser.
Dom Jones' perfectly flighted flag kick was met by the soaring Cal Parker whose header across was volleyed home by Keith Gray to level the scores before the break.
Holbeach had the better of the game at the start of the second half, but Ketton kept their shape and started to grow into the contest again.
Breakell and Jones led by example with a terrific work-rate in attack with the former going close with an audacious effort.
Breakell received a pass which he flicked over the head of the home centre-half before chesting it down and unleashing a stinging shot from distance which the home keeper saved.
The confidence continued to flow for Ketton and they were rewarded by taking the lead with 20 minutes remaining.
A cross from the right reared up and hit an Holbeach arm in the box with Breakell following up his two-goal haul last week by taking on the penalty-taking duties and hitting home the spot kick into the corner.
Ketton then switched their formation to a 4-5-1 which saw Harry Bell drop to full-back and Jones move into midfield.
Holbeach had a couple of half-chances, but Ketton held out to secure their first three-point haul of the season.
Holdup added: "It's great to get the first league win and I was very pleased with the performance and attitude of the lads.
"It was also good to see that a setpiece we had been working on paid off from my point of view.
"Hopefully we can now build on this again at the weekend in what will be a tough game against Uppingham."
