Disappointing display as Stones are beaten by Bugbrooke
Blackstones will be aiming to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat at Bugbrooke when they entertain Long Buckby at the ALH Recruitment Stadium on Wednesday night.
Stones suffered a disappointing 3-0 away reversal at the Badgers after only coming out of hibernation in the second period when the hosts had already wrapped up the points.
From the off Bugbrooke were out of the traps like greyhounds and Stones reeled under the pressure and relentless challenges.
The hosts did not allow Stones to settle on the ball and nipped at the ankles like terriers.
Their tactics bore fruit after just eight minutes as a long ball down the wing behind the Stones defence was fired across goal to the unmarked striker who calmly side-footed the ball into the net.
Stones tried to respond with Ben Cowles showing a good turn of speed towards goal only to see his cross evade the visiting attack.
Player-boss Lee Clarke found it hard to shake off the close marking that denied him any space to work as once more Stones seemed to lack the killer punch in the last third.
Bugbrooke doubled their lead just before half-time with a quick move forward and sharp passing in front of goal before being rifled in.
On a positive note, on-loan Posh Academy goalkeeper Joshua Allen pulled off two excellent saves, one diving to his left and a reflex block on his line to keep the deficit to two.
The second half saw Stones start, having made two changes, with a more attacking formation as Josh Edmondson began to made in-roads down the left while Ben Porter sprayed the ball about trying to release the strikers.
But, apart from testing the side-netting, Stones were unable to drag themselves back into the game and then suffered a further setback when Wilkins Makate was sent off for a perceived two-footed challenge.
With only five minutes remaining, Stones conceded a free-kick 30 yards out in the centre of goal which was dispatched into the top corner with little ceremony.
Stones: Allen, Easson, Wilmer (Goldson-Williams), Pell, Makate, Fox (Porter), Moore-Papworth, Boome, C Clarke (Edmondson), L Clarke, Cowles. Subs not used: Simpson, Buttery.
