Sanders to put players through their paces
Ketton bosses Ian Abbott and Chris Lyon are determined that their side will pack a punch during pre-season training after enlisting the help of world champion boxing trainer Kevin Sanders.
The Pit Lane players will be put through their paces at Sanders’ Peterborough gym on Thursday in readiness for the forthcoming Peterborough League Premier Division campaign.
And co-manager Abbott believes fitness will be crucial to his side's chances of success in a season which starts with a Premier Division derby duel against Stamford Lions on Tuesday, August 7.
Abbott said: “We are very serious in our preparation and we want to the players to have the same mentality.
“They are a great bunch of lads who are all good footballers, but we need to step up our game off the field as well.
“We want our team to be hard to beat by playing a compact organised system when we’re defending and having the fitness to do that is a big part of it.
“I’m a qualified boxing coach myself so I know Kevin very well and I’m looking forward to seeing him put the players through their paces.
“It’s something a bit different and will hopefully get players working muscles that they haven’t used before.
“Kevin has done really well in his boxing career, training the likes of Nigel Benn, and getting someone like this to help us shows the players how serious we are.”
After an in-house friendly to open their pre-season campaign, Ketton then ran out 2-1 winners against United Counties League Division One side Blackstones last Saturday.
They host another higher level outfit on Saturday when Bourne make the trip to Pit Lane for a noon kick-off.
Ketton have signed goalkeeper Andrew Skeels from Farcet while also bringing in Mackenzie Byrne from the same club.
The majority of last season’s squad have also re-signed to stay at Pit Lane for the coming campaign.
