Cottesmore Amateurs boss Neil Miller believes he has added the vital ingredients to his squad after a double signing swoop this week.

The experienced Jack Whyley has returned to Westray Park from Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division rivals Asfordby Amateurs while exciting young striking talent Shaun Smith has made the switch from higher level Holwell Sports.

Whyley progressed through the youth ranks at Cottesmore before moving up to the United Counties League where he gave sterling service to Harrowby United.

Smith has previously played in the United Counties and East Midlands leagues with both Holwell Sports and Melton Town.

The duo will go straight into the Cottesmore squad for Saturday’s away match at Hathern as Amateurs look to return to winning ways following last weekend’s away defeat at Ellistown.

Miller enthused: “We haven’t been ripping up any trees so far this season so we were looking to strengthen the squad.

“Jack has played for us before and we are more than happy to welcome him back to the club.

“He’s played in the UCL Premier and Division One with Harrowby so brings a lot of experience with him.

“It’s something that we need. We need someone to take a bit of responsibility who is prepared to take a few things on the chin.

“I know that he’s prepared to do that and I’m more than OK about him doing it.

“Shaun hasn’t had as much game-time this season as he would have liked so it’s a great bonus to get him as well because he’s also played at a higher level. He’s a young lad with great potential.”

Smith’s arrival will soften the blow of losing top scorer Tom Pope who is expected to be sidelined for up to three months with ankle ligament damage.

Wilson Iron is another long-term injury casualty with knee ligament damage, but Luke Smith has returned to action recently after a spell on the sidelines.

Miller added: “Our injury list isn’t getting much better, but hopefully there is a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel with Luke returning. He just needs games now.

“The two new signings are great additions and I will certainly have a massive selection headache once everyone is fit.

“We are just getting ready for the next game now though. We are all looking forward to Saturday and can’t wait for the game.”
