Daniels boss Graham Drury is hoping the fans will turn out in force for his side’s eagerly-anticipated pre-season opener against League One neighbours Peterborough United.

Stamford host a Posh side managed by ex-Daniels boss Steve Evans at the Zeeco Stadium on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.30pm).

Evans is expected to bring a strong squad for his side’s opening friendly and Stamford manager Drury is hoping both sets of supporters make the most of the opportunity to get the first glimpse of their charges.

Drury said: “It’s really a match for the fans.

“It’s the first chance for the Peterborough supporters to see their team in action while we will have several new faces on show as well.

“It’s one for the Stamford people to come out and watch. Hopefully we can get a massive crowd and turn it into a great night.”

A crowd of 923 watched last season’s clash where ex-Daniels striker Ricky Miller – who has recently left Peterborough to sign for Port Vale - hit a hat-trick to help Posh to a 7-3 win.

Drury added: “It’s a good chance for us to pit our wits against a professional side. Ricky came back to haunt us last season so hopefully we can put on a better show this time.

“It’s going to be difficult because we will only have had a couple of training sessions and, with several players away, we’ve only had the chance to work on fitness rather than shapes.

“The lads don’t really know each other yet because we will five or six new faces on show so it will be a tough game.”

Posh have been very active in the transfer market during the close season after adding 10 new signings to their squad following the loan acquisition of midfielder Adam King from Swansea on Monday.

Strikers Siriki Dembele and Matt Godden have joined from Grimsby Town and Stevenage respectively while boss Evans has been back to his native Scotland to sign full-back Jason Naismith from Ross County and midfielder Mark O’Hara from Dundee.

Midfielders Louis Reed and Alex Woodyard have moved from Sheffield United and Lincoln City respectively while goalkeeper Aaron Chapman has signed from Accrington. Full-back Colin Daniel from Blackpool and Mansfield centre-back Rhys Bennett complete Posh’s summer signings.

Stamford have so far signed five new players – defenders Chris Salt, Taron Hare and Jordon Cooke, midfielder Cleveland Taylor plus Reece Morris who agreed terms at the weekend after spending last season with league rivals Gresley.

Cooke is along several players missing the Posh match along with Mike Armstrong and Olly Brown-Hill who are all away.

Defender Henry Eze – the only remaining player from last season yet to decide his future after Callum Ball committed to the Daniels last week – is currently away in his native Nigeria for the summer.

Admission for the Posh match is £5 for adults with concessions admitted for £3. Children aged between 12 and 17 can gain entry for £1. Anyone under 12 will be admitted free.

The Posh match is followed by a Lincolnshire Senior Trophy tussle with Evo-Stik Premier Division side Grantham Town.

The game has been put back 24 hours to Monday, July 9 (kick-off 7.30pm) to avoid a clash with the World Cup semi-final.
