Ketton ran out 4-2 winners in the battle of the PDFL Premier Division’s Rutland sides on Tuesday night, beating Uppingham Town at a sunny Pit Lane.

Both sides came into the match unbeaten in the new league campaign with the hosts winning 3-1 against Wisbech Town Reserves and Uppingham getting the better of Crowland Town 3-2.

It was far from a classic, with both teams looking to still have a little rust on them in from pre-season. In many ways it was a clash of styles as the neat passing Ketton looked to open Uppingham up with nice technical football while visitors Town tried to attack on the break.

Both had some success, although the long grass stifled Ketton’s ambition to keep it down and play a little.

In the end it was an error which created an opening for Ketton’s Lewis Morley to open the scoring. The Uppingham defence tried to play the ball out from the back, were dispossessed and Morley finished from ease with the side of his foot from the centre of the goal in the fourth minute, with James Farrell giving the scoring pass.

Uppingham responded by scoring a glorious goal, fired into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Lewis Morley regained Ketton’s lead before the break with a well taken flick from a Joe Morley free kick.

The game failed to find any rhythm in the second half. With 17 minutes to play Uppingham levelled from a corner and looked as if they may snatch a point.

However, the goal kick started Ketton and with 10 minutes to go they struck twice within a minute. First Dom Jones curled an effort into the roof of the net before Josh Russell smashed them clear moments later. Connor Breakall was the provider for both goals.

Ketton manager Rob Ward said: “I’m glad to walk away with three points although it was a tough game to watch. We got off to a flying start but we took our foot off the gas and got drawn into a scrappy game. Our fitness and quality showed in the second half as with the game at 2-2 we had plenty in the tank to finish strongly and scored two good goals in the second half to win the game.”

Ketton, who are in third place, face Crowland at Pit Lane this Saturday.

While Uppingham are in seventh place and host Deeping Rangers Reserves at Tod’s Piece at the same time.
