Stamford AFC open their league campaign at home to Witton Albion tomorrow as they start their bid to win promotion from the Evo-Stik NPL First Division South.

Manager Graham Drury said: “The first league game is important. You don’t want to lose that. You have to get something on the board.

“We are obviously going out there to win it with a positive state of mind.”

Drury said Witton are a handful who he expects to be fighting for the play-offs come the end of the year. But the Daniels have had a highly positive pre-season on the field, putting in several impressive performances against sides several leagues higher, which Drury said has got the fans “buoyant.”

But the manager admitted he is glad it is over and done with, following the drama of the club’s relegation reprieve being taken back, players coming and going and injuries.

Lee Beeson and Kern Miller have been added to the injured list this week to cause a few headaches at the back.

Beeson broke his jaw in a five-a-side game on Sunday and Miller is suffering with his appendix.

Despite that Drury has let Brad Wells and Jordan Lemmon leave the club along with Tommy Cooney and Andy Hall.

Although that is not the last Stamford fans are likely to hear of them as Wells and Lemmon have switched to Spalding, and Hall has gone to Rugby who Stamford play away on Tuesday.
