First final appearance for 20 years as Uppingham defeat Falcons

Uppingham Town are through to their first cup final for 20 years.

The Peterborough League Division One side secured their place in the final of the Leicestershire Intermediate Cup after a 2-0 away win at Loughborough Falcons on Saturday.

Goals from Callum O'Berg and Rob Montgomery set up a final date at Holmes Park on Tuesday, March 5, with Leicestershire Senior League Division One side County Hall.

In windy conditions on Saturday both teams found it difficult to play too much football - although the match started at a high tempo with end-to-end attacking intentions.

Rob Forster had the first chance of the game after 15 minutes when he collected a ball just outside the box and went past two defenders only to see his shot well saved by the home keeper.

Falcons responded and forced Tom Hubbard in the Uppingham goal to come and clear from outside the box when the home striker went through onto a ball over the top of the Town defence.

Within a few minutes it was Uppingham who took the lead with a goal from O’Berg who burst through into the box after good work from Martin Turiccki and Montgomery and lifted the ball over the keeper with a good finish.

Shortly after Forster again had his shot saved by the Falcons keeper while Hubbard in the Town goal made a terrific save to keep the away side in the lead.

Town went close again five minutes before the break when Jack Salt connected well with a Forster corner only for a Falcons defender to clear off the line to take the teams in to half-time with just the one goal apart.

Uppingham started the second half strongly and seemed to be gaining some dominance in the game which created a few chances with the Falcons keeper being kept busy with some good saves from Forster and Jordan Spencer.

The game became more difficult for the hosts after 20 minutes of the second half when one of their central defenders made an awful challenge on Turiccki with a two footed stamp.

The referee had no option but to issue a red card and it was to Uppingham's players credit that after the incident they maintained their discipline and went on to create more chances as the second half progressed.

Forster was unlucky not to score with 15 minutes remaining when his shot was saved by the Falcons keeper and a few minutes later Spencer hit a cross shot just wide after some good play by the away side.

Uppingham did get the ball in the net direct from a Forster corner but this was ruled out for a foul in the box.

They doubled their lead shortly after though as Montgomery made it 2-0 with good finish from inside the box when he was put through by Turiccki.

Falcons kept pressing forward only for Uppingham to catch them on a break with a few minutes left as Billy Henshaw found himself through on goal but was denied again by the home keeper to maintain the 2-0 lead and a win for Uppingham at the final whistle.
