Cup clashes next for Uppingham after extending unbeaten run
Uppingham Town will head into the New Year on track for promotion from Division One of the Peterborough League.
They ran out 5-1 winners in their recent league game as they defeated an Eye United side at Tods Piece who had been the last team to beat Uppingham nearly fourth months ago.
Town are now on a 16-match unbeaten streak and have a 12-point cushion in second spot after applying for promotion to the Premier Division.
First half goals from Rob Montgomery from a Rob Forster corner and a second goal from Forster took Uppingham into half-time 2-0 ahead.
Continued pressure from the start of the second half by Uppingham resulted in Forster and Montgomery each scoring again and, with a further goal from James Howe, gave the home side a 5-0 lead.
It was with a few seconds left of the game that Eye United scored the best goal of the game when Jacob Joyce controlled the ball in the centre circle and struck his volley from 50-plus yards into the top corner of the net which gave Tom Hubbard little chance. It was an outstanding goal from the away side with the last kick of the game.
Uppingham now have two cup quarter-finals to start the new year.
They host Ashby Ivanhoe Knights in the last eight of the Leicestershire Intermediate Trophy on January 5 before entertaining Oundle the following weekend in the Peterborough Challenge Cup.
