Bourne Town manager Jimmy McDonnell had joint chairman Steve Elger’s words ringing in his ears after his side’s defeat in their first home game of the season.

Any thoughts of disappointment in conceding three avoidable goals to potential title challengers Long Buckby were swept aside when Elger told the Wakes’ boss after the game: “Keep your head up, you’ll be alright”.

But McDonnell, full of good thoughts for his young side anyway, said: “We played a very good footballing side but there was nothing really between us.

“I thought their third goal was a great strike but we’re not a million miles off.

“We’re playing some good football, we’re trying to keep the ball welll and they’re an honest bunch who will keep doing all the work and putting the effort in.

“If we can try and help them keep the ball and look after the ball a little bit better, we’ll have a very good football side.”

“To be honest, we did it well in patches and it was just that little bit of uncertainty now and again where someone has called for the ball but a few of us haven’t been a 100 per cent sure of dealing with it.

“But we can’t grumble too much because they are all local lads who pay £1 to wash their kit.

“I wanted to come in and give these lads the chance at this level of football.”

Bourne are at home again on Tuesday night as newly-promoted Whittlesey Athletic visit The Abbey Lawn.
