UPPINGHAM Town boss Richard Kendrick declared his side is the best in Rutland after they pulled off a sensational comeback with four goals in a 20-minute spell to turn around a 3-1 deficit.

Kendrick’s side has been named Team of the Month in the Peterborough and District League twice this season already and, after Saturday’s win, Kendrick said: “We have proved we are the best side in Rutland this season.”

Town went a goal down to Alconbury before half time on Saturday and boss Richard Kendrick made decisive changes after a lacklustre opening spell from his side.

His decisions brought instant rewards with Andy Sayers converting a spot kick within 60 seconds of the restart but it wasn’t until Alconbury had retaken the lead with two more strikes that Uppingham woke up.

Will Thomas, who came on just before the interval, played a blinder and the league’s pace-setters suddenly found their touch in front of goal.

Steve Pridmore and Dave Laughton levelled the match with goals close together around the hour mark.

Neil Clarke then put Uppingham ahead with a cushioned header after the visiting keeper could only parry the ball.

With ten minutes remaining Scott Penny made the three points safe for Uppingham, who face Alconbury again this weekend in the return fixture.

Kendrick said he would have preferred 1-0, but added: “They showed good character in the second half.

“Putting Will on made a difference. He is a match winner when he wants to be. This was his best half all year but he has to play at that level each week.

“But at 3-1 up, Alconbury should have tightened up and taken the points”

Uppingham sit in top spot, 11 points clear of the chasing pack but Pinchbeck have four games in hand so Kendrick expects a tight finish to the season.

Fortunately for Uppingham, Pincheck lost to Coates on Saturday. “It is a bonus; a bit of luck for us,” said the Uppingham boss.
