Fenland Cup Final

BOURNE Ladies fell just short of lifting a trophy at the end of a great season last Wednesday.

Bourne were beaten 3-1 by Outwell Ladies in the delayed final of the Fenland Cup which was played at Wisbech St Mary last Wednesday, bringing an end to a splendid cup run.

They fought back after conceding an early goal, levelling through Lotti Christie. But Outwell regained the lead before half time and sealed the win late on as Bourne began to tire.

Outwell took the lead within the first two minutes, breaking Bourne’s offside trap to create a chance which gave keeper Amy Hammond no chance.

Bourne were a touch unlucky when a fierce shot from just inside the area cannoned off the cross bar. Another chance to equalise went begging when Bourne’s striker blazed over the bar.

But Bourne’s pressure finally paid off when a defence-splitting pass from Sammy Hawkins found Bourne’s top scorer, Christie clean through on goal and she made no mistake, passing the ball into the net beyond the advancing keeper.

Outwell soon retook the lead however with a carbon copy of their opener, seconds after the restart and the score remained at 2-1 until half time.

The second half was closely fought and Bourne maintained the pressure on the Outwell goal with a series of corners. But they were unable to find the killer touch.

Christie fired in a terrific shot after a strong, determined run but this time the Outwell keeper made a superb save.

Outwell scored what proved to be the decisive goal, with ten minutes remaining. By this stage the Bourne team were running on empty after giving absolutely everything in the previous 80 minutes.

From that point there was no way back.

Manager Paul Crawley said he was proud of all the players for their throughout the whole season.

Coach Tina Crawley added: “While the overall result was disappointing Bourne Ladies should take a great deal of satisfaction in coming away with a runners-up medal and have had their finest season to date.
