Bullivant seals extra-time victory

(After extra time)

BASTON finally sealed their Memorial Cup victory in extra time, after making hard work of a game that should have been won after an hour.

Baston dominated and had countless chances to take the lead with Andy Moss hitting the cross bar and Craig Bullivant, Greg Rawlinson and Ben all spurning good chances in the first 20 minutes.

They finally took the lead on 35 minutes. Jon Howard’s curled ball was headed down by Ben Hudson into the path of Ross O’Loughlin, who took a touch before burying the ball past the keeper.

The home side continued to put the pressure on but couldn’t add to their score before half time.

In the second half, Baston carried on where they left off before the break and doubled their advantage shortly after the break, with O’Loughlin finding captain Simon Ward in the box who put the ball past the keeper for 2-0.

A change of tactics and personnel seemed to stop Baston playing their best and allowed Caythorpe to grow back into the game.

Caythorpe struck an unlikely consolation and then dramatically equalised with 10 minutes left.

Davies played a suicidal crossfield ball across the defence which gave Rob Clarke no chance as the Caythorpe strikers passed the ball around him to level.

With tensions running high, the game went to extra time. Fortunately Caythorpe’s fitness faded as the home side retook the advantage with top scorer Bullivant latching onto a clearance and volleying past the keeper.

Bullivant sealed the victory in the final minutes, converting substitute James Ward’s cross to make it 4-2 and put Baston into the next round.

Baston face Grantham League Premier Division Croxton in the next round, on March 26.

Baston: Rob Clarke, Mindy Valys, Tom Bedford, Liam Davies, Jon Howard, Simon Ward (Charlie Sutton), Andy Moss (James Ward), Ross O’Loughlin, Ben Hudson (Matt Holdup), Greg Rawlinson, Craig Bullivant.
