Royce picked up their first win of the season against a Birstall side sitting five places higher in the table at the start of play.

Coach Charlie Wallace experimented with a new 4-5-1 formation to add some bite to the middle of the park the move paid dividends.

Royce pressed hard from the off and gave the visitors no time to settle and play a passing game. After only five minutes Ross Bussingham latched on to a through ball to slot the ball home and put the Oakham side in front.

Instead of sitting back, Royce continued to press with Sam Wood popping up in all areas of the field.

Liam Truscott and Ross Bussingham combined for Royce’s second goal. Truscott released Bussingham down the line and he cut back and sent in a cross for Liptrott which found its way in to the top corner of the net.

Birstall reduced the arrears with a well-taken goal that gave Jordan Wallace no chance but just before the break Bussingham played in Truscott who restored the two-goal lead, rifling the ball into the far corner of the net.

Wallace made changes at half time with Joe Buckle, Jack Garvin and Isaac Limbrick all coming off the bench.

Royce kept the visitors at bay until an excellent header from a corner reduced the deficit, and the Leicester side levelled with an almost carbon copy.

The central defence partnership of captain Matty Brown and Zied Cheikh had been superb all day and when the visitors did find a way through goalkeeper Jordan Wallace made an excellent save.

Charlie Wallace shuffled his pack again and 10 minutes from time the ball was played to Bussingham who swivelled on the edge of the box and hit a half volley into the corner to complete his hat-trick and a memorable 4-3 victory.
