STAMFORD Daniels won and Blackstones lost in their mid-week fixtures last night.
Stamford returned to league action in the Evo-Stik Division One league after the FA Trophy with a win away at Hucknall Town with new manager Tommy Brookbanks winning over his old club.
Nathan Watson got a debut goal for the Daniels early in the second half and the second came five minutes later after the ball was turned into the Hucknall net by a defender.
A hard fought 2-0 win for the Daniels that puts them joint top of the league missing out by goal difference but with a game in hand.
Blackstones lost 2-1 to Holbeach at home in the United Counties League Premier Division.
The Stones were left to reflect on chances which went begging in the first half.
Early on Ben Easson and Michael Nelson had shots blocked in the same attack while a goalbound header by Nelson was cleared off the line by Adam Jackson.
Holbeach went in front after 26 minutes when Jackson’s ball in from the left was swept into the roof of the net by Ashley Stevens for his eleventh goal of the season.
Blackstones returned to the attack and Easson was denied by a good save from the recalled Leigh Overton in the Tigers goal, with the keeper also saving well from Danny Barker.
Jamie Stevens was close to doubling Holbeach’s advantage but his towering header from a corner went wide.
The Tigers did double their lead after 63 minutes when Tommy Treacher’s low shot squirmed through home keeper Lee Crockett’s grasp.
Blackstones were back in the hunt after 67 minutes when Barker’s shot deflected in off Holbeach man Andy Tidswell.
The home side were reduced to 10 men when Pete Smith received a second caution while in the process of being substituted.
Tidswell volleyed narrowly too high for Holbeach and it needed a brave save from Crockett to to deny Ashley Stevens a visiting clincher.
