Cottesmore Amaterus 1 - 1 Stapenhill

HARRY Stannard capitalised on a mistake in the Stapenhill defence to earn Cottesmore a point on the opening day of the Leicestershire Senior League.

Stannard's persistance paid off when he chased a through ball and had the simplest of finished once Stapenhill's defender and goalkeeper had left the ball for each other.

Until then, Stapenhill had had the better of the chances at Rogues Park, and took the lead ten minutes before the interval. After the break, Cottesmore created more goalscoring opportunities but joint boss Gary Drake reckoned a draw was a reasonable result.

Drake said: "We were perhaps lucky to go in 1-1 at half time. They had a lot of possession buyt created few chances.

"In the second half we were better but not getting beaten on the opening day is important and we had a good result when you consider that we have five players missing."

The absentees forced Drake, and his co-manager Steve Duffy, to abandon the 4-2-3-1 formation favoured during pre-season for a simple 4-4-2.

Cottesmore are in action again on Tuesday evening when Sileby Saints, who lost their opening game 2-0 to Kirby Muxloe Reserves on Saturday, visit Rogues Park. Kick off on Tuesday is at 7.45pm.
