Football: Daniels beat Belper 4-2 to make play-off final

Have your say

Stamford AFC are through to the play-off final of the Evo-Stick Division One South after beating Belper 4-2 this afternoon (Monday).

The Daniels won in extra time at Belper after the score was tied 2-2 in normal time. Stamford will now play Chasetown on Friday.

In the blazing sun and on a good pitch the Daniels got off to a slow start and were 1-0 down within six minutes when Belper’s Glyn Cotton curled one in from the edge of box. And just seven minutes later the home side doubled the lead with Froggatt steering in a cross.

With a mountain to seemingly climb, the Daniels finally kicked into action and were rewarded in the 19th minute when Ricky Miller pulled one back.

And not long before half-time Stamford had a strong claim for a penalty when Miller was brought down in the box. However the referee was having none of it and Miller was booked for his protest.

The Daniels went in 2-1 down at half-time but came out fighting with chances early on for Saunders who hit the post and Hall who was just beaten to the ball by the Belper keeper.

The game became a bit scrappy as Stamford upped the pressure and continued to create chances. Sean Wright headed narrowly wide after good work from Hempenstall and Hall.

Then midway through the half Miller got onto the end of a low Brooks’ free kick to level the scores.

Stamford continued to press as the tension mounted in the final few minutes although Belper were also managing to get forward. Hall and Miller nearly carved out a winner right at the death but just couldn’t get the ball in the goal.

That sent the game into extra time and Stamford started brightly with chances for Miller, Saunders and Brooks. Then Stamford got a penalty when the Belper keeper brought down Hall who stepped up to bury the spot kick.

Stamford were leading at half-time in extra time. In the second period Stamford continued to have chances and with a few minutes left on the clock Richards hassled a defender to win the ball, round the keeper and find the net. The goal sparked celebrations from Stamford fans and players.
