DANIELS striker Ricky Miller scored four on Tuesday as Stamford boss Graham Drury got his first look at his team in action during a friendly against Bourne.

The match finished 5-3 in the Daniels’ favour and although Stamford were in good form, Bourne gave them a solid first test in the pre-season calendar.

Drury said: “It was a pretty good workout and I was impressed with Bourne and the lads really held their own. We were trialling a couple of keepers and a couple of mistakes cost us goals and they held their hands up.

“One left a shot because he thought it was going wide and ended up in the corner and the other kicked it against a defender and went straight to a their strikers.

“We also looked a little flat at the back at times which is something we are going to have to look at.

“Obviously because we’re playing a couple of levels higher than them I think that puts an extra yard of pace on them and we had to work. We went in 2-1 down at half-time.”

But it was Miller who stole the show with finishing described as “unbelievable”. He was in the right place and the right times according to Drury.

Gary King grabbed the other for the Daniels who played two teams, one in each half, to give players a run out and put some to the test.

Daniels were last night due to play Thurnby Nirvana at home and face Conference North side Hinckley United tomorrow, also at home.

Speaking yesterday, Drury said: “We want to get these first three friendlies out of the way and then we’ll get down to how we are going to shape up.

“Thurnby may be in a lower league but they beat Coalville 5-4 and drew with Loughborough so they should be a good test.

“Hinckley should also be a good test.”

Drury also praised Bourne for being superb hosts on the night and said the match drew a good crowd of about 150.

Wakes boss Darren Munton said: “For the first game the lads did exceptionally well. They brought a full squad and I think their fitness and a bit of quality showed in the end.

“But for a first friendly the lads acquitted themselves well.”

Bourne face Hykeham at home tomorrow in their next friendly. Kick off is at 3pm. They face Peterborough Northern Star next Saturday.

The Daniels are set to play Grantham on Tuesday at home (7.45pm) followed by Boston United on Monday, July 30 (7.45pm).
