FOOTBALL: Defeat frustrates Stones boss

Blackstones 1 - 3 Peterborough Northern Star

BLACKSTONES joint boss Michael Goode said he was "irritated more than anything" after Wednesday evening's defeat at the hands of Peterborough Northern Star.

Stones had started well and could have taken the lead through Michael Nelson, who fired a great chance wide early in the first half, but the home side failed to capitalise on their possession and it proved costly.

Liam Hook gave the city side the lead midway through the first half and a mistake by Stones keeper Lee Crockett handed Star a valuable cushion soon after. Crockett's clearance only reached Billy Smith who slammed the ball back into the Blackstones keeper's net.

Nick Davey scored Star's third 20 minutes into the second half but although Luke Avis pulled a goal back for Stones they had a mountain to climb.

After the match, Goode said: "I am irritated more than anything because we have created chances but did not take any. For the first 20 minutes we looked stronger and we did not allow them to settle.

"If Michael had scored it would have been a completely different game. But they came back into it and scored with their first meaningful attack. It was a lapse in concentration for their second. He should have cleared his lines."

Stones: Lee Crockett, Matt Porter, Ben Porter, Luke Avis, Mark Hackett, Luke Hunnings, Nicky Young (Matt Simpson), Andy Boome (Jacob Smitheringale), Sam Bettinson, Michael Nelson, Robie Pearce (Liam Buttery).
