Bourne Town 2 - 2 Northampton ON Chenecks
TWO late goals saved a point for The Wakes at the Abbey Lawn on Saturday afternoon.
Bourne were trailing to two first half goals but stunned Northampton ON Chenecks with a drama late rally on the opening day of the United Counties League season.
Alex Brockbank pulled the first back with five minutes remaining, slipping the ball home from close range. Moments later Bourne's pressure paid off and Seb Hood levelled for the home side who came close to adding a third in injury time when another Hood effort was diverted over the bar.
"The lads deserve a pat on the back for coming back like that," said Wakes boss Darren Munton.
Chennecks had missed an earlier penalty when Elliot Muddiman gave them the lead two minutes after the half hour, cutting in from the right and firing a left foot shot into the top corner. Shortly before half time, the visitors doubled their advantage when Jez Hindle headed home from a set piece.
"We let him have a free header," complained Munton, who threw caution to the wind as the end of the game approached.
"The second half was nip and tuck. Mike Feely had done brilliantly in the first half but we could not get the ball to him in the second. We moved Seb Hood up front for his height and after Alex scored we chucked Dan Smith up front as well.
"It was a really hot day and that always affects the players. We looked a bit short in midfield at times and we did not always help ourselves. But from five minutes to go and losing 2-0, we have to be pleased to get a point."
Bourne's next match in division one is away at Rushden and Higham United on Saturday. The Wakes then host Oadby Town, who beat Potton United 8-0, at the Abbey Lawn on September 1.
Bourne: Alex Brown, Kev Elgar, Dan Smith, Aaron Jesson, Tom Cardall, Jonny Currall (George Holiday), Mike Feely, Seb Hood, Craig Rook, Tom Caldicott (Andy Moss), Ben Easson (Alex Brockbank). Sun unused: Sean O'Donnell.
BOURNE Town Reserves begin their season on Saturday at home to Oadby Town Reserves. Oadby's 2nd XI began their UCL Reserve Division One campaign today, beating Olney Town Reserves 9-1.
