FOOTBALL: Five star Oakham are off to a great start

OAKHAM United got off their Peterborough and District League season off to a great start, beating Coates Athletic 5-1 at home yesterday afternoon.

Nathan Arkle scored an opening day hat-trick and Craig Welbourne and skipper Eddie McDonald were also on the scoresheet.

Oakham's next match is at home to Ramsey Town on Saturday.

Uppingham Town came away with a point from their opening day match with pre-season title favourites Peterborough Sports.

Town were ahead at half time thanks to a goal from Jamie Binley.

Elsewhere in the league's top flight, Deeping Rangers Reserves beat Riverside Rovers 1-0 at home.

Langtoft United made a winning start to their Division One campaign with a 2-1 victory away against Holbeach United Reserves but Ryhall United and Stamford Bels were both beaten. Ryhall lost 2-0 at Sawtry, while Bels went down 3-0 at Hampton Sports.

Midweek fixtures this week include Uppingham's trip to Deeping's reserves in the league on Wednesday, and the PFA Jack Hogg Charity Shield between King's Cliffe United and Pinchbeck United at Chestnut Avenue, Peterborough, also on Wednesday.
