Fleckney Athletic 1 Oakham Imperial 1

THE best Oakham can hope for is a fourth place after Tuesday evening’s draw with third-placed Fleckney Athletic.

Defences came out on top with Nathan Bottomley, James Farr, and Darren Short once again excellent.

Oakham went behind in the opening minutes. Goalkeeper Shane Hicks fumbled a routine ball and Fleckney gratefully accepted the gift.

This setback spurred Oakham on and Dave Hudson, Graham Nicholls, Steve Smith and Lucas Alias dominated midfield

It was no surprise when the equaliser came after 19 minutes. Farr received the ball 30 yards from goal and unleashed an unstoppable shot that flew over the sprawling keeper into the top corner.

Oakham continued to pressure the hosts but found their defence in excellent form with Shawn Williams and Luke Palmer limited to a couple of half chances.

The second half was a much more even contest, each side only creating one good chance apiece. Hicks made a good save when Fleckney finally pierced Oakham’s defence with 25 minutes remaining before Richard Phoenix looked to have given Oakham the lead from Smith’s cross only for a defender to block his shot near the line with the keeper well beaten.

Oakham: Hicks, Bottomley, Farr, Short, Phoenix, Nicholls, Hudson, Alias, Smith, Palmer, Williams, Rix, Oboh, Clapton.
