Oakham United Reserves built on last week’s win with a 3-3 draw away at unbeaten Leverington Sports Reserves, but will feel slightly aggrieved that defensive errors cost them all three points.

Oakham started brightly and within five minutes Sven Hart whipped in the free-kick that was met by the head of Michael West, who saw his effort bounce back off the far post and the ball skip past Martin Owers who was unable to pounce .

Oakham continued to press and were rewarded with a goal after 15 minutes. Another Hart free-kick was met, yet again, by the head of West and this time his effort looped over the despairing keeper and into the net.

Oakham keeper Andy Collin had a quiet first half but with three minutes remaining in the half Leverington broke from the edge of their own penalty area and while he pushed the first shot onto the post the rebound fell straight at the feet of an unmarked striker, who tucked it away.

After the break Leverington were 2-1 up after only two minutes of the half played. Sloppy defending left substitute keeper Ashley Ward with little chance, as the ball was chipped over him and into the net.

Oakham woke up and Lee and Carl Brierley-Lewis had some of the better chances to equalise, but their efforts seemed to be in vain.

In the 66th minute, Oakham managed get their second goal, thanks to a terrible error by the Leverington keeper and hard work from Brierley-Lewis. The keeper played a short goal kick, which caught one of his defenders off guard and Brierley-Lewis battled to win a throw-in level with the penalty area. He threw the ball to Lee, whose pass found Hart on the edge of the area. Hart opened out and slid the ball towards the bottom corner, with the ball going in off of the post.

Oakham made another mistake at the back with only 5 minutes remaining and this time Marcus Maciejewski scored.

Oakham didn’t give up and got another equaliser with just two minutes to go. Hart’s set pieces had caused plenty of problems and he hit a corner for Tony Maher to smash the ball in.

Maher possibly had a chance to win the match in the last minute, as he skipped past a defender in the area, but couldn’t get a decent shot away.

Assistant manager Dave Grieve said: “We didn’t play as well as last week and we gifted them their goals with some silly mistakes at the back. Saying that, we looked good going forward and always looked like we could score a few.

“It was good to take a point away from home and it was good to see the guys didn’t give up when we went behind, especially at the end.

“We play Leverington at home next week, so we know what we’ve got to work on to turn one point into three points.”
