Wittering maintained their position at the top of the league with a thumping 5-1 away win over Thorney Reserves.

Wittering started well on a tough service and Wittering’s early pressure paid off when a one-two between Adam Ledger and Nathan Steele led to Ledger firing from 12 yards to make it 1-0 to Wittering.

Steele chipped the keeper from 20 yards to make it 2-0 after 25 minutes after good play by Ledger and Simon lucking.

It was soon 3-0 as Billy Nairn got the third from a cross to the back post by Ashley Middleton.

Wittering scored the four goal of the game on 60 minutes when Ledger chased a lost cause and got his just rewards when the centre half and goal keeper made a mess of things that left Ledger to score into an empty net.

Thorney pulled a goal back when the forward hit a shot from the edge of the box which squirmed under Luke Watson’s hands.

Nairn got the final goal of the game again after good wing play by Middleton.

Player manager Eddie Winks said: “This was another important win for us today, The pitch was never playable but we won’t complain as it keeps the gap to 9 points between us an Netherton.

“We tried to get the ball down and play even though the conditions were terrible.

“We were too strong for Thorney, although there were times where they tried to kick us off the park, we never got involved with them but I felt we might have got better protection from the referee.

“All in all it was a good result and a good performance.

“We now move onto next week where we are away to Ryhall which always proves to be a tough game at their place and with the added incentive of it being one of our local rivals.”
