Daniels’ record is ended by leaders

Stamford’s unbeaten away record came to an end with a scrappy 1-0 defeat at Coalville yesterday evening.

It was a frustrating result for the Daniels who were missing several players including skipper Richard Jones, who failed a late fitness test.

They set out to stop the Evo-Stik League First Division South leaders adding to their impressive goal tally and for an hour of a niggly encounter had defended stubbornly even if they found little joy up front. Gary King’s header, which flashed narrowly wide at a corner, was the closest Stamford came in the first half.

But just after the hour the Daniels conceded a free kick on the edge of their box and Danny Jenno curled his shot into the right hand side of Stamford’s goal.

The goal sparked the Daniels to push forward more, with Andy Hall switching from right back to his more familiar wing role.

Hall came close to levelling when his drive was deflected up onto the bar late on and the ball was scrambled away; and Hall and Sam Mullarkey worked an opening for Mullarkey whose shot was blocked at the near post as Stamford drew a blank for the first time since September 1.

Stamford, who picked up four yellow cards, remain third in the table but with a widening gap between themselves and the top two, Coalville and King’s Lynn, who also won last night.

The Daniels are back in action on Saturday when they take on fifth-placed Sheffield FC at Kettering Road.
