Defensive display delights Daniels boss

Daniels boss Wayne Hatswell wants more clean sheets on the back of Saturday’s victory at Market Drayton.

Stamford won 1-0 thanks to Richard Jones’ early strike and remain second in the Evo-Stik League First Division South but it was the clean sheet that especially delighted the Stamford boss.

The Daniels have only shut out their opposition four times in the league and cup this season and Hatswell said: “Hopefully that was the first of many.

“We did good defensive work in training on Wednesday and I think that showed. We didn’t just defend as a back five; the whole team defended and they only had two real shots on goal in the game.”

Where the Daniels could have done better was up front where the woodwork and an outstanding display from Drayton’s keeper Martyn Davies.

“It says it all when their keeper is man-of-the-match,” added the Daniels boss. “With more ruthless finishing we would have run out easy winners. But when you are only one goal in front it gives them something to chase.”

Hatswell was pleased with the performances of his two newest players, Ben Saunders, who played up front with Alec Denton, and Jordan Hempenstall, who came on as a second-half substitute.

Hatswell said: “They fitted in well. The two weeks without matches gave the lads a chance to bed in and that showed at the weekend.

“Ben did well in his first game for a while. He linked up well and a I am glad he played 90 minutes.

“Jordan took a knock midweek but was close to starting. He had a very good chance and it would have been nice to see him get off the mark.”

Denton and Mitchell Rose, who are both on loan from Rotherham United, will complete their initial loan period on Saturday, when Stamford host Brigg Town at Kettering Road. Hatwsell was unable to confirm today whether the loans would be extended.

Kick off on Saturday is at 3pm.
