Rainworth MW 1 Stamford 2

League Cup Preliminary Round

STAMFORD left it late to win at Rainworth on Wednesday evening with a 92nd minute spot kick from Gary King settling the tie.

The Daniels started the game well but it took until the 20th minute for the Stamford to have their first really good chance. Danny Brooks put a free kick into the penalty area where King looped a header goalwards that caught out Joe McCormack but fortunately for the keeper it hit the post. King opened the scoring on 39 minutes when a goalmouth frenzy saw the ball rebound kindly to the striker who slammed the ball past the keeper from eight yards.

Moments later King nearly made it two with a low drive that the keeper did well to get down to and hold.

In the second half, King’s shot shaved the post and he was close five minutes later with a shot was palmed away by the keeper.

On 58 minutes Jamie Goodacre fired a 35-yard free kick towards the Stamford goal but Ziccardi pulled off a wondersave to tip it over.

David Staff came on with 15 minutes to go and almost immediately scored, King flicked on a Robbie Maddox throw to Mullarkey and his cross found Staffy unmarked; but his shot flew over the bar.

Ten minutes from time Rainworth were level. A cross from substitute Oli Woods was palmed out by Ziccardi straight to Lavell White who blasted his shot into the net from 10 yards.

Extra time looked on the cards when Mullarkey broke into the box only for Lee Cooksey to fall on the ball and the referee Michael Bell judged the defender had handled it. King coolly put the spot kick to the goalkeeper’s right.
