Stamford’s fine start to the season continued in Cheshire this afternoon (August 23).
They beat Nantwich 3-0 to make it three wins out of three in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division.
Jon Challinor set the ball rolling with the first goal on the stroke of half-time. He tapped in at the far post after a great run by Ellis Myles and a neat flick on by Nabill Shariff.
A bullet-header by Cameron Powell from a corner made it 2-0 on 61 minutes and then Ryan Robbins, almost inevitably, found the back of the net on 72 minutes. That was Robbins’ fifth goal in three games.
Spalding were at home to Chasetown in Division One South of the Evo-Stik League and were beaten 2-0.
Another local team to have made a flying start to the campaign are United Counties League Premier Division pacesetters Holbeach United.
They extended their winning run to four games with a 3-0 win over Long Buckby at Carters Park.
Tommy Treacher netted after just four minutes for the roaring Tigers and then Lee Beeson beautifully chipped over the keepr on 18 minutes to make it 2-0.
Early in the second half Beeson missed a penalty but made amends from the spot towards the end to complete the scoring.
Huntingdon were also winners, beating visiting Harborough 3-0 with goals by Dan Newman, Chris Jones and Jack Warwick, and Yaxley drew 1-1 at Oadby with Andy Furnell on target.
But there was little else to shout about for local sides in UCL Premier Division action.
Peterborough Northern Star slipped up at home to Rushden & Diamonds 4-1 even though the visitors had a player sent off on the half-hour mark. Jason Kilbride scored their equaliser in the 28th minute with a cracking free-kick.
Deeping Rangers went 1-0 up against Cogenhoe at Outgang Road with a goal by Craig Parker on 50 minutes but ended up losing 3-1 after conceding three times in the final 12 minutes.
Wisbech lost 4-1 at Thurnby Nirvana with Billy Smith scoring the consolation effort.
In Division One, Bourne drew 1-1 at home to Lutterworth Athletic, who began the day top of the table.
Leaders now though are Peterborough Sports, who stretched their unbeaten start to five games with a 2-1 home success over Northampton ON Chenecks.
Blackstones were crushed 7-1 at home by Bugbrooke St Michaels.
