David Staff’s Daniels won their first game under the new Stamford manager, beating AFC Rushden and Diamonds 3-2 on Wednesday evening.

Jordan Smith put Stamford ahead in the first half and, after slipping 2-1 down, Alvin Jarvis and Tom Liversedge scored to ensure a winning start to the Daniels’ pre-season.

Staff, who used the match to try out several combinations of players, said afterwards: “There were a lot of positives to take. I thought Alvin and Ash Robinson did especially well

“There were certainly parts that we want to improve but at this stage our aim is to get people to know each other.

“I was more pleased in terms of the defence – despite the mistake for their second.

“I would have liked us to have played the ball more crisply going forward but we won and the winning habit is important.”

Stamford, with many new signings wearing Daniels’ red, had the better of the first half with Smith, who was with Stamford during the early stages of last season, putting the hosts ahead shortly after the half hour.

The striker finished well, tucking the ball past Diamonds keeper Tom Cross after combining well with Shawn Richards.

Ash Robinson had a glorious chance to double their lead before half time, collecting a great cross on the edge of the box but drilling is shot hard and low but narrowly wide.

Diamonds, who will be among the favourites to win the United Counties League title this season, levelled early in the second half with Fazel Koriya lobbing Alex Lynch in the Stamford goal.

Calamitous defending gave Koriya a simple second before the Daniels levelled with a thumping strike, in off the left upright, from Jarvis.

Stamford’s winner was tucked in by Liversedge, who reacted quickest when Jordan Hempenstall’s spot kick - awarded for a foul on the striker - was pushed up onto the crossbar.

Stamford: Alex Lynch, Ryan Walker, Nathan Haines, Tom Batchelor, Richard Jones, Ash Robinson, Shawn Richards, Alvin Jarvis, Jordan Smith, Andrew Burgess, Richard Wesley. Subs: Jordan Hempenstall, Tom Liversedge, Sean Wright, Liam Richardson, Jon Challinor, Ewan Clarke, Aaron Kennedy.
