Boss Michael Goode was left to count the cost of Deeping Rangers’ failure to pick up more points.
He admits they should be much closer to AFC Kempston Rovers who were held to a 1-1 draw at the Haydon Whitham Stadium on Saturday.
The Walnut Boys slipped two points behind Leicester Nirvana in the title race after Will Bird’s opener was wiped out by Josh Crawley.
Goode said: “Coming into this game on the back of a four-match unbeaten run, we certainly tried to win it.
“That’s the way in which we approach every game but we tried something a bit different as well.
“We knew they would play 4-4-2 but if we matched them up and tried to beat them at their own game then that would not happen. Instead, we looked to out-pass them in the first half.
At 1-0, Kempston came searching a bit more and once they got the equaliser, we rode our luck in the last 10 minutes. Apart from that spell at the end, the game was pretty even.Michael Goode
“They had some chances but they all came from set-pieces and they never opened us up.
“We had opportunities when the weight of the pass wasn’t quite right.
“We tried intricate stuff but we should have taken a chance to hit the target. Their keeper didn’t have a save to make.
“We started the second half really well and that could have been a title-winning save to keep out Scott Coupland.
“Bird had a good finish but we gave away another stupid goal.
“Looking back at the past six to eight weeks, we’ve been in a number of good positions like this and defensive errors have cost us.
“We have probably lost 10 points in the past two months and that’s why we are ninth instead of fifth.
“We know we should be in and around the top five but we have let ourselves down.
“At 1-0, Kempston came searching a bit more and once they got the equaliser, we rode our luck in the last 10 minutes. Apart from that spell at the end, the game was pretty even.”
David Burton-Jones, Ryan Semple and Spencer Tinkler should be back in the squad for Tuesday night’s Hinchingbrooke Cup semi-final at home to Peterborough Northern Star.
