Oakham United have appointed former Blackstones and Peterborough Northern Star assistant Wayne Oldaker as manager, the club has confirmed this morning.

Oldaker, who was unavailable for comment due to family commitments, will take charge as Oakham resume their Peterborough and District League season on September 14 with a home tie against King’s Lynn Town Reserves.

Previous joint-managers Andy Saddington, who has taken on the vice-chairman role, and Pat Johnson have both stepped down in recent weeks with Johnson stepping aside after Saturday’s 7-0 loss at the hands of Sawtry.

Johnson, who expressed disappointment at the managerial switch but remains on the club’s committee, and said: “We lost a lot of players to other sides at the end of last season and have four players out injured. We had just two regular first team players on Saturday.”

Chairman Alistair Forbes said: “This has been a hectic start to the season and I would personally like to thank Andy and Pat for the work they have done for the club and look forward to working with them in the coming years.”

Oakham, who finished fifth in the Peterborough League last season, have ambitions of achieving United Counties League status and Forbes said Oldaker’s remit is to bring in new players alongside the present squad.

He said: “This is a very exciting time for us. We have a new manager in place who has United Counties League experience and this, along with the players he will be attracting, will help us achieve our aims.”

Oakham have been given until mid-September to settle the squad after the changes and expect to have first and second teams back in action on September 14.

Forbes added: “The first teams season started very early and with footballers taking holidays and playing other sports it has been difficult for not only us but many other clubs in the area to field teams. This needs to be looked at for the future.”

Second team managers Jamie Saddington and Dave Grieve will continue to run training seasons while the new management team gets settled in. Any players wishing to join the club should call Greive on 07837 900087 or Saddington on 07413 054311.
