Dave Stratton enjoyed the perfect start to life as Blackstones manager with a 2-1 victory at Lincoln Road on Saturday.

A late goal from Jason Kilbride sealed the victory after Lewis Entwhistle had levelled for Long Buckby in the second half.

Andy Boome had stunned the visitors with a second minute goal to get Stones on track and the new man in charge was delighted by what he saw.

“As first games go I could not have asked for any more,” said Stratton. “Everything went to plan.

“I knew they would work hard but the first goal was also a really well worked move. They have proved they can get the ball down and play.”

It was a solid display from Stones who had conceded 11 in their previous three outings and although Buckby enjoyed a lot of possession, they rarely threatened Lee Crockett’s goal.

Stratton tweaked the Stones set-up in the second half, pushing their fullbacks further into midfield to counter Buckby’s five-man midfield, and although Buckby pulled a goal back the Stones boss reckoned his sides deserved the three points.

“Their goal was a bit fortunate but we responded well.

“We left it late but without a shadow of a doubt we deserved it. For all the possession they had in the first half , Lee did not have a save to make.”

New signing, frontman, Andy Beech was on the Stones bench after his move from Yaxley but Danny Barker looks set to leave the Stamford side.

Stratton confirmed that Peterborough Northern Star have made an approach and that he would not fight to for the midfielder’s services .

“It looks like he’s going to Northern Star,” he said.

“If Danny Barker wants to go, he wants to go. I only want people to play here who want to play for Blackstones.”

Blackstones’ Hinchingbrooke Cup tie at Royston Town looks unlikely to go ahead tomorrow evening because of snow. Their next home match is against Stewarts and Lloyds Corby on Saturday afternoon.
