Just as in the cup game, Spalding took the lead. Simon Mowbray put them ahead in the 29th minute but aside from the goal there was little to get excited about during a very scrappy first half.

But the second period proved much more interesting, with Deeping pushing forward and creating lots of scoring opportunities. Battersby, Oliver, Heron and Burton-Jones all came close before the hard working Mark Jones popped up to level the scores.

The game became increasingly physical with Baker and Ford for Spalding, and Jones and Burton-Jones for Deeping all receiving yellow cards.

Burton-Jones twice hit the post with free-kicks and overall it was two points dropped for Deeping, rather than a point gained.

Deeping: Doughty, Evans, Jackson (Fenton), Julian, Tinkler, Weston, Jones, Burton-Jones, Battersby, Heron (Cox), Oliver (Moreman). Unused subs: Gilbert, Smitheringale.

l BLACKSTONES winning start to the league season came undone at Holbeach on Wednesday evening.

Stones lost 4-2 at Carters Park with former Stones man Ash Stevens scoring twice for the hosts.

Richard Thompson and Jacob Smithergale (who has moved from Deeping) scored for Stones.

Stones are at home to S&L Corby tomorrow (kick off at 3pm) while Deeping travel to Long Buckby.
