Rutland Veterans sit fourth after five matches in the Peterborough and District League’s Veterans Over 35s division.

They have beaten Perkins and Wisbech, drawn with Netherton and lost to Deeping and Moulton Harrox.

The last three games - all home fixtures - have been played at Cottesmore Amateurs’ Rogues Park ground and have featured strong performances from Kevin Seagrave, John Neal, Neil Duncan and Dean Bowes.

Vets skipper Mike Toland said: “The competition has given local footballers the opportunity to play for the first time at a high standard of veterans football against teams featuring former United Counties League footballers.”

The over 50s team will play their first knockout game of the Umbro National Veterans competition at Cottesmore on Sunday, March 24 when they will take on Ford Basildon.

The remaining rounds and final will be held in April and May.

Seven of the Veterans squad have also been selected for the England Veterans squad ahead of an England international on Good Friday.

Barry Suggett, Adrian Stannard, Geoff Stanhope, Kerry Nimmons, Jim Robinson, Mark Bryan and Richard Wilson are all expected to play against Wales at the TA’s St George’s Park ground at Burton.

Suggett, Stannard and Nimmons have also been selected for the return fixture at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium in May.
