Stones go into cup final on a high

Have your say

STONES go into tonight’s County Cup final against Grimsby Borough on the back of a superb 4-0 demolition of Irchester United on Saturday.

Tonight’s match will be played at Lincoln City’s Sincil Bank and Stones bosses Darren Jarvis and Michael Goode have all their squad available with the exceptions of cup-tied pair Ben Porter and Billy Oliver, and Ryan Francis who was not signed before the semi-final and is therefore ineligible.

Saturday’s win at Lincoln Road, was Stones’ biggest victory since October and one of their most eye-catching of the entire campaign as they leapfroged their opponents and left co-boss Jarvis drooling.

“We’ve drawn with St Neots, King’s Lynn and Newport Pagnell, and also beat Long Buckby very well recently,” said Jarvis. “But this is right up there with the best of the bunch.

“The lads worked hard to get the ball and used it well in the right areas when they did have it.”

David Burton-Jones broke the deadlock before Addie Staffieri reached a personal milestone when doubling the Stones advantage with the pick of their goals.

Staffieri provided the finishing touch to a seven-pass move involving Robbie Pearce, Michael Nelson and Danny Barker to grab his 25th of the season.

Luke Hunnings powered in a third before substitute Elton Holmes completed the scoring with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

Jarvis added: “We scored four excellent goals, but the second is one of the best team goals we’ve scored all season.”

Blackstones: Duggan, Quy, Ellis, Hunnings, M. Porter, Barker (B. Porter), Burns (Oliver), Burton-Jones, Pearce, Nelson (Holmes), Staffieri. Unused: Goode, Oldaker.
