HOLDERS Blackstones went out on penalties in the first round of their defence of the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy on Wednesday.

Stones drew 4-4 with 2009 winners Boston Town and went out due to single missed spot kick during the final penalty drama.

Stones took an 11th minute lead when Elton Holmes played in Danny Barker to score with a low shot off the far post.

Two minutes into first half added time Barker added a stunning second with a curling, long range shot but even deeper into added time Lorand Borbely pulled the Poachers back into the game.

Two minutes after the restart Boston levelled. Alex Beck’s shot squirmed through Lee Crockett’s grasp and just after the hour mark, the Poachers took the lead for the first time. Jacob Smitheringale fouled Borbely and Gary Bull converted the spot kick. Minutes later and Stones were level. Keeper Chris Wright fumbled Smitheringale’s cross and Holmes was on hand for a simple finish.

Boston regained the lead after 77 minutes when Tom James’ shot was deflected over Crockett but with just a minute left, Ben Easson was brought down by Wright and Michael Nelson scored from the spot forcing extra time and then penalties.

The first five kicks in the shoot-out were scored with Easson and Barker scoring for Blackstones. But Matt Cox fired Stones’ third against angle of post and bar. Craig Parker and Nelson converted their kicks and Billy King kept his nerve to seal a 5-3 win for the Poachers.

l STONES moved up to third in the league after snatching a dramatic Saturday success.

Danny Barker and Ben Easson struck two stoppage time goals to grab victory from the jaws of defeat. Barker and a Michael Nelson had scored earlier in the game.
