A SUPERB solo effort from Dave Hudson set Oakham on their way to victory over Aylestone on Saturday.

Despite being second best for the opening 10 minutes, Hudson’s mazy run from halfway followed by a cool finish put Oakham ahead.

Within minutes though the visitors levelled when Shane Hicks in the Oakham goal misjudged the bounce of the ball to gift them an equaliser.

Aylestone then went close to taking the lead on several occasions as they pushed forward in numbers but resilient defending by Jammy Farr, Mike Reeson and Darren Short kept them at bay.

While Aylestone were good going forward, they left themselves exposed at the back and Luke Palmer got his first of the game from just inside the box to restore Oakham’s lead. Both teams went close again before the break but it remained 2 –1 at half time.

Oakham had more of the play in the second half and with the midfield five of Hudson, Graham Nicholls, Steve Smith, Richard Phoenix and Jonny Woods getting more of the ball it was not long before Palmer made it three with a fierce drive from just inside the box.

With 25 minutes remaining, Oakham sealed victory; Shawn Williams latchd onto a loose ball 25 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable volley.

Oakham’s defence then failed to clear the ball and Aylestone got a second but there was to be no comeback and Oakham could have had more but for some excellent saves from the visiting keeper.
