MISTAKES proved costly for Thurlby United who suffered Grantham and District League Divisional Cup final disappointment on Sunday.
They were 1-0 down after just 10 minutes when Newark’s striker opened the scoring with an overhead kick.
Thurlby started to get into the game with Charlie Sutton having a shot cleared off the line and Matthew Medler heading over. But a great strike from Newark’s winger doubled their lead.
At the start of the second half, a mistake by Thurlby’s keeper gifted Newark a third goal and an unassailable lead. The Thurlby lads pulled one back through a goalmouth scramble with Sutton getting the final touch.
They thought Scott Enderwick had made it 3-2 only to have it ruled out for offside. Instead it got worse for the Thurlby keeper who dropped the ball once more for Newark to make it 4-1.
As the game came to a close Thurlby kept pushing but a slip from defender Ciaren Reynolds allowed Newark to make it 5-1 and they were caught in similar fashion for Newark’s sixth.
