THE DANIELS lost 3-0 away to Matlock on Saturday as new boss Tommy Brookbanks watched two of his players sent off in his first game in charge
Striking duo Gary King and Sam Mullarkey were both dismissed in Saturyda’s match for what Brookbanks called “forwards’ tackles” during this defeat at higher-level opposition in the FA Trophy.
King walked in the opening period while Mullarkey signed off his short Stamford career on a low note when being sent off in the second half. Mullarkey now leaves the club to join Corby Town.
“It’s a shame because the game was even-steven while it was 11 versus 11,” said Brookbanks. “But you’ve got no chance at a place like that when having people sent off.
“Neither of the lads made a malicious tackle and a yellow card would have sufficed in both cases.
“The referee has to use a bit of common sense.”
Stamford fell behind just after King departed before two second-half goals sealed their fate.
They also lost midfield man Danny Steadman and left-back Adam Hewitt to injury in what Brookbanks dubbed a ‘chaotic’ first day in the Daniels office.
Brookbanks added: “We learned a lot about the players during the game and afterwards when having a few minutes with them.
“Everyone gave their all and if we can produce this sort of effort in league games, we’ll do well.”
New signing Joe Pheasant, who has followed Brookbanks from Hucknall Town, made an eye-catching debut at centre-back.
Wideman Nathan Watson has also made the same switch but was not involved. Brookbanks hopes more arrivals will follow in the next few days.
