Rutland Veterans ended their first season in the Peterborough and District Veteran’s over 35 division with a narrow win over Peterborough Northern Star at Rogue’s park.
The highlight of a scrappy game came early in the second half, when Lee Wood capped an impressive team move with a rocket into the top corner.
Rutland had chances to extend their lead, the best of which fell to Mark Toms who chose to go for goal from a difficult angle rather than square the ball for a waiting team-mate.
Northern Star rallied late on and Vets had goalkeeper John Morton to thank with a couple of good saves. Home boss Mike Toland looked mightily relieved to hear the referee blow the final whistle.
The win places Rutland in fourth in the table. Northern Star have one game remaining but would have to win by an extraordinary scoreline to move above Rutland.
Deeping Rangers top the eight team league but could be beaten on goal difference if Stamford Bels win their final match.
