Uppingham Town captain Martin Bennett scored the only goal of his side’s win over Coates Athletic on Saturday in the first minute of the game.
Bennett was alive from the start to capitalise on a great cross from Will Thomas to give his side the lead in the PDFL Premier Division clash at Todd’s Piece.
Oli Webb, back from injury, was at the centre of everything Uppingham were doing well, and his pass set up Rob Forster to shoot from a narrow angle.
However, Forster pushed his effort wide.
Tom Hubbard in the Uppingham goal was up to the task when he was called into action when Athletic striker Rob Speechley had an attempt on target before the break.
In the second half, Uppingham took control of the game, using the wind to keep the ball in Coates’ half.
However, the home side could not finish their chances.
First Forster saw his shot stopped by Coates keeper Charles Bradshaw before Jake Norton and Martin Turiccki missed with hopeful long-range drives.
Coates hit back on the break and probably should have scored an equaliser but, as Uppingham had found all afternoon, finishing proved difficult.
Bennett almost notched his second of the day but his powerful shot was stopped by Bradshaw who did well to prevent Ryan Walker from finishing the rebound.
The visitors had one last chance to steal a point but last line of defence Hubbard blocked a shot with his leg to ensure his side could close out the win.
Uppingham moved up one place in the Premier Division table to sixth and have six games in hand on league leaders Netherton United.
Next up for Uppingham are Stilton United who are currently three places below them in the league having played seven games more.
