Shea shines in Stableford success

The start of the summer season at Rutland Water was marked with the Gents Monthly Stableford being played.

The conditions, however, didn’t represent spring as strong winds swept across the course making playing conditions extremely tough.

Steve Halfpenny, a 19-handicapper, had a steady round in progress through 11 holes, but all that was about to change on hole 12.

The 12th hole is a tough par three over water, playing 130 yards into a strong wind across from the right with the pin in a tight back right position which is not an easy proposition for the most experienced golfer.

Steve pulled out his pitching wedge and, with a pure strike, the ball rode the wind and started homing in on the target. A couple of bounces followed before a short roll the ball disappeared into the heart of the hole.

It was high fives all round with his playing partners and a moment that will not be forgotten in a hurry.

Steve managed to compose himself for the rest of the round and posted a great score of 40 points.

However, this was only good enough to finish second on the day. The competition was won by Shea Shannon who ended with 42 points.

Back in a tie for third were past captain Tony Byers-Brown and first team captain Robbie Pengelly with 39 points.

Steve kindly paid for a bottle of brandy to be put on the bar for all the members to celebrate his achievement.
