The Lincs League track and field final match was held at Grantham on Sunday, with all four teams – junior boys, junior girls, men and women holding 4th place at the start. Forty-one athletes competed in three or more events so that maximum points could be gained from each one.

The first race of the day was the County 10,000m on the track – 25 laps endured by Rich Lomas-Brown and Richard Smithers. Rich finished in 5th place but his laps were wrongly counted so had done and extra lap when it was not required in a time of 41mins 45.7! Richard Smithers completed the race in 44.40.7 and was 4th veteran man.

Natalie Cole was the sole representative in the County 5,000m but did the club proud coming 2nd with a time of 25.00.6 – her first County Silver as an adult.

Forty-three junior personal best records were beaten at this event, which shows how well each of the athletes are improving with their training. A special mention goes to Richard Lomas-Brown who did so many events he scored 62 points for the team! Eleven club records fell.

The club thanked to all the athletes – junior and senior who took part in all 4 of the league matches, plus family members and all the parents who aided the officials in the field events. Thanks also to all the supporters who attended last league match -their cheers around the track were invaluable.

Bourne Town Harriers now move into the cross country and sports hall athletics season and will be participating in the Friendly Frostbite League, Lincs Cross Country League, inter-club sports hall competitions as well as County selections. Its autumn presentation is on September 24 to celebrate the spring and summer achievements. Club training will be evolving to reflect the recent successes with plans to continue using the track during the winter months at either Peterborough or Grantham and to include plyometrics, strength and conditioning and nutrition workshops.

The club is becoming so successful that it is looking for more coaches and volunteer helpers to join the team – so if you have an interest in assisting in road running, cross country, throwing, jumping or sprinting then please contact us. If enough volunteers come forward this may allow for an extra club training night.

Junior training continues at Bourne Grammar School on Fridays from 6-7pm on the sports field and in the sports hall. Senior training is held on a Tuesday and Thursday 6.30 – 7.45pm. All new members are welcome at any time – contact Rich Lomas Brown 01778 420394 or visit www.bournetownharriers.org
